PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — In a bizarre encounter caught on video, a Florida council official is seen telling a resident that the smoke from his barbecue cannot leave the property.
“I’m only here because of the odor, I’m only here because of the smoke,” the official is heard telling the resident.
The resident mentions that nobody in the neighborhood has complained about barbecue smoke over the years.
“Frankly, today, I can smell it, I can smell it again right now, but I’m on your property… You’re allowed to have it smell on your property, so that doesn’t count, but when I’m on the street, that’s when it counts,” the official explains.
The official goes on to emphasize that the rule, in force by Pinellas County, states that barbecue smoke cannot cross the property line.
When asked by the residents what the consequences are, the official says that’s not for him to decide and that he will simply “write it up” and send it to the department.
The video was posted to Facebook by a user under the name Scotty Jordan. It has since been posted to YouTube and has over half a million views.
