By Barbara Ann Kelley,

St. Petersburg, Fla. – In a move to better identify with it’s readers in the Tampa Bay Area the St. Petersburg Times is changing their name to The Tampa Bay Times as of January 1, 2012.

The Times name change will also effect the Tampa Bay Lightning. No longer will they have to drive to the St. Pete Times Forum to play Hockey. Starting in 2012, the Bolts Ice will be housed at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

According to a Times press release, chairman and CEO Paul Tash predicted the change also would reinforce the area’s identity, both locally and across the nation. “We are putting our own greatest asset – our good name – toward the future of the Tampa Bay region,” Tash said.

The Greater Bay Bay Area has a population of over 4.2 million people. Three-fourths of the times subscribers live outside St.Petersburg.

The Times believes the name change will better define the 100-year-old newspapers focus on all of Tampa Bay not just St. Petersburg.

The next question is will the Rays ditch St. Pete too? Give us your opinion.
