Do you have a budding Mozart or Hendrix on your hands? Well, this list of the best places around Tampa to help groom your teen or kiddy virtuoso is a great place to start. The list includes Patel Conservatory, Musicology and Don Banks Music.

The Patel Conservatory, affiliated with the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, offers more than 100 classes in music, theater, and dance for students of all ages and experience. Their instructors are professionals active in their field and have themselves been educated at top-notch schools. The Patel Conservatory’s music programs include youth orchestras, jazz instruction, a rock school, pre-kindergarten classes, and more. Most classes are for groups, but private lessons are available if you feel your child needs special one-on-one attention. Private lessons are available for the piano, guitar, percussion, and more and begin at $122.50 a month for 30 minutes of instruction (general instruction is about half that price and are at least 1.5 hours in length). If you’d like to feel out the Patel Conservatory before making a commitment, they also offer free classes throughout the year for every age group. In some cases, students will be required to audition before being allowed to register. These auditions occur on specific dates and require a $15 fee, so check their website for details. Parents say the Patel Conservatory offers top-notch, professional instruction.

Musicology is a Greek term referring to the scholarly study of music, but the instructors at this arts school approach their work with as much playfulness as they do professionalism and passion. Musicology, in business since 2006, offers an eclectic mix of classes that are taught ensemble or on a one-on-one basis, which costs $20 – $22 for 30 minutes. Labs cover rock, jazz, praise and worship, and a few sub-genres in between. The courses usually run for 10 weeks at $400 and students get to do a recording and a finale concert. Musicology’s instructors hail from various backgrounds and have impressive lists of accomplishments and some are faculty members are music conservatories.

Don Banks Music offers private lessons on a variety of instruments (guitar, trumpet, saxophone, violin, piano, etc.) and also rents instruments to students who don’t have their own. Lessons are once a week and each session is about 30 minutes long and range in price from $80 – $90. The staff are accomplished musicians and performance artists. Parents say the instructors are very positive and do their job well. Although the minimum age is 7 for music lessons, exceptions can be made for children who show superior promise.
