Chris took part in one of the most momentous sporting events ever to unfold in Tampa Bay – the Lightning’s 2004 Stanley Cup championship. He brings a rare hockey insider’s perspective to the mix, both as a former player and a current member of the Lightning’s television broadcast team on SunSports. But he also has a keen interest in a wide range of sports beyond the game he excelled in.
Hailing from Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, Chris has called the area home for the past 10 years after being traded to the Bolts on March 5, 2002 from the Carolina Hurricanes. Initially, he was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 1994, traded in 1999 to the Colorado Avalanche, where he won his first Stanley Cup championship in 2001. Then came the trade to Tampa Bay three years later, where fans fondly knew “Dinger” as the Lightning’s tough left wing. He retired from the NHL in 2006 but played two more seasons in Sweden and Denmark before hanging up his skates to do analysis of Lightning games starting in 2009.
Chris by-passed higher education to play major junior hockey in the World Hockey League, starring for the Brand Wheat Kings from 1992-1996 in Manitoba. Among his honors: serving as captain of the team that won the WHL championship in 1996. Chris is married with two boys, ages 3 and 5.
Chris’ View: “I hope to bring direct knowledge from my sports background to anentertaining discussion of all sports and athletes, being an avid sports fan myself.”
