NHL Power Rankings

Rank   Team Record   Change   Comment
1 Tampa Bay Lightning Tampa Bay Lightning 18-6-2
Four losses in the last seven games merely proves that the team is mortal. The 10-2-1 home-ice mark is super, and the next three games are at home.
2 Winnipeg Jets Winnipeg Jets 17-6-4
▲ 4
If Winnipeg has a weakness, it’s that 7-4-3 record away from home. This week, the Jets have three straight road matchups. Somehow, we think they’ll be okay.
3 Nashville Predators Nashville Predators 16-7-3
▲ 2
With a mere plus-seven goal differential, the Preds are proving themselves to be gritty grinders (again). They’ve picked up right where they left off last year.
4 St. Louis Blues St. Louis Blues 17-8-2
▼ 2
Three of our top four teams play in the Central Division. That’s a scary thought come playoff time, as whichever team would emerge from this dogfight would be exhausted.
5 Los Angeles Kings Los Angeles Kings 17-8-3
▲ 5
Five straight victories, including the last four on the road, have thrust the Kings back up to the top of the Pacific Division. That 7-5-2 home mark must improve, however.
6 New Jersey Devils New Jersey Devils 15-7-4
▼ 2
Losing 5-0 to Arizona on the road Saturday was a low point. The Devils have a home-and-home now with the Blue Jackets, although the games have a two-day break in between.
7 Columbus Blue Jackets Columbus Blue Jackets 17-9-1
The team has won eight of its last ten games to find itself atop the Metropolitan Division. After the two games against New Jersey, Columbus hosts Arizona and Edmonton.
8 New York Islanders New York Islanders 15-8-2
A four-game winning streak ended on Friday night against Ottawa, and the Isles have been sitting around stewing since then. They have four straight on the road next.
9 Vegas Golden Knights Vegas Golden Knights 16-9-1
▼ 6
A 6-7-1 mark on the road is hurting the Golden Knights, but six of the next eight are at home on the Sin City Strip. Vegas also suffered its first-ever shutout loss last week, in Game 23.
10 Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto Maple Leafs 17-10-1
▼ 1
The Leafs have good balance, with an 8-5 home record and a 9-5-1 road mark. That’s good when nine of the next 12 are away from Ontario.
11 Dallas Stars Dallas Stars 16-10-1
▲ 9
The Stars are streaking with five consecutive victories. Nashville, St. Louis and Vegas are up next. Can Dallas continue this success against those top teams?
12 San Jose Sharks San Jose Sharks 14-9-2
▼ 1
The Sharks are consistent these days, beating bad teams and losing to good teams. They finish a four-game road trip in Washington tonight, but we’re not sure where the Caps fall in those aforementioned categories.
13 Pittsburgh Penguins Pittsburgh Penguins 15-10-3
▲ 9
Four straight wins now have followed three straight loss, which in turn came after two straight wins. You get the picture.
14 Boston Bruins Boston Bruins 12-8-4
▲ 2
Winners of six in the last seven, the Bruins sit tenth in the Eastern Conference right now. They’ve also played the fewest games (24) in the NHL so far.
15 New York Rangers New York Rangers 14-10-2
▼ 2
The Rangers have won five of their last six, although they now have consecutive road dates against the Penguins and the Capitals.
16 Washington Capitals Washington Capitals 15-11-1
▼ 2
A lot of teams have positive momentum, and Washington is one of them with five victories the last seven times out. They have three straight at home this week, too.
17 Minnesota Wild Minnesota Wild 13-10-3
▲ 2
With a 5-7-1 road record, Minnesota cannot be looking forward to three straight away from home ice this week— all in California.
18 Calgary Flames Calgary Flames 14-11-1
▼ 6
Losers of four in the last six, the Flames dropped a 7-5 decision at home to the Oilers on Saturday. That’s a lot of goals!
19 Vancouver Canucks Vancouver Canucks 13-10-4
▲ 2
The Canucks finished a six-game road trip with a 3-2-1 mark and then won in its first time back home. They host Carolina and Philadelphia next.
20 Carolina Hurricanes Carolina Hurricanes 11-9-5
▼ 2
Three of the last four games for the Hurricanes have gone to overtime. Isn’t it nice that the extra session is only five minutes long now?
21 Chicago Blackhawks Chicago Blackhawks 12-10-5
▼ 6
Four straight losses, two in overtime to Dallas, have grounded the Blackhawks a bit. They’re 11th in the Western Conference, despite the fourth-best goal differential.
22 Colorado Avalanche Colorado Avalanche 12-11-2
▼ 5
Four losses in the last five games have buried the Avs in the Central Division. After hosting Buffalo on Tuesday, Colorado heads out on a four-game, East Coast swing.
23 Montreal Canadiens Montreal Canadiens 13-12-3
▲ 4
The Habs have won five straight by a combined 24-6 margin, including a 10-1 shellacking of the Red Wings on Saturday night. Ouch!
24 Anaheim Ducks Anaheim Ducks 11-11-5
▼ 1
Winners of just one in the last seven, the Ducks are ten points behind the Kings in the Pacific Division, a grouping Anaheim has won five straight seasons now.
25 Ottawa Senators Ottawa Senators 9-10-6
Dropping eight of nine is not the way to put yourself in good position. The Sens still have four more games to go on a seven-game road trip, too.
26 Detroit Red Wings Detroit Red Wings 10-12-5
▼ 2
Seven straight losses, including three in overtime, are crippling, no matter when they happen in the season. But Detroit has five straight at home now to get out of its funk.
27 Edmonton Oilers Edmonton Oilers 11-14-2
▲ 1
Four victories in the last six give the Oilers hope they can get out of the hole they're in, six points out of the final playoff spot in the West. The time is now.
28 Philadelphia Flyers Philadelphia Flyers 8-11-7
▼ 2
With a ten-game losing streak right now, the Flyers are crashing. The silver lining is that five of the losses have come in OT. Next up? Three road games in four days, starting tonight.
29 Florida Panthers Florida Panthers 10-13-3
With a 5-5-2 home record, the Panthers are looking forward to three consecutive home-ice matchups. After that, however, it’s five straight on the road.
30 Arizona Coyotes Arizona Coyotes 7-18-5
▲ 1
Four of the last nine games have gone to OT, and the ‘Yotes are 2-0-2 in those games. Also, Arizona is 6-6-4 since its 1-12-1 start, so the team is playing much better now.
31 Buffalo Sabres Buffalo Sabres 6-17-4
▼ 1
We have a new cellar dweller now, as the Sabres are just 1-9-2 in their last 12 games. Four of the next five games are on the road, too, including the next three straight.
