NHL Power Rankings

Rank   Team Record   Change   Comment
1 Washington Capitals Washington Capitals 39-11-6
The Caps have allowed the fewest goals in the league. Their goal differential of +71, is by far the best in the NHL. This could be the year.
2 Minnesota Wild Minnesota Wild 34-12-5
▲ 1
This Minnesota team is as good as any team in the Western Conference. Another tough matchup with Chicago is coming up next week.
3 New York Rangers New York Rangers 37-18-1
▲ 3
After an impressive road win over Columbus, the Rangers have stretched their win streak to six games. An upcoming Sunday matinee matchup with the Washington Capitals will likely be the best game of the week.
4 Pittsburgh Penguins Pittsburgh Penguins 34-13-7
▼ 2
The Penguins are struggling with injuries a bit, but when healthy, this team is as good as any team out there.
5 Chicago Blackhawks Chicago Blackhawks 35-17-5
▲ 8
The resiliency is amazing. Just as doubt begins to creep in, the Hawks pull off a five-game win streak.
6 Nashville Predators Nashville Predators 27-21-8
▲ 2
The timing is perfect. The Preds’ five-day break precedes a much-anticipated matchup with the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night. Expect maximum intensity.
7 San Jose Sharks San Jose Sharks 34-18-5
▼ 3
Defenseman Brent Burns is just two points behind Oilers forward Connor McDavid for the overall scoring lead in the NHL. The last defenseman to win the scoring title was Bobby Orr in 1974-75.
8 Edmonton Oilers Edmonton Oilers 29-19-8
▼ 3
Oilers are a solid team, but have lost four of their last five games. They are going through some growing pains, but should emerge unscathed.
9 St. Louis Blues St. Louis Blues 29-22-5
▲ 6
Since the dismissal of head coach Ken Hitchcock, the Blues have played inspired hockey. They are now riding a four-game win streak, during which they outscored opponents by a combined score of 14-3.
10 Montreal Canadiens Montreal Canadiens 31-19-8
▼ 1
Sparkplug forward Brendan Gallagher is finally back in the lineup after missing more than a month. This should help the Habs break out of their recent slump.
11 Ottawa Senators Ottawa Senators 29-18-6
▼ 1
Sens must learn how to finish. The Canadiens are all but handing them the Atlantic Division lead, but Ottawa just cannot seem to get over the hump.
12 Columbus Blue Jackets Columbus Blue Jackets 35-15-5
Blue Jackets are now an unimpressive 8-10-1 in the 19 games since their epic 16-game win streak ended.
13 Anaheim Ducks Anaheim Ducks 29-18-10
▼ 6
Anaheim is off to a record of 1-1-3 after five games of a six-game road trip. The Ducks are trending in the wrong direction as they prepare to wrap things up with a game against the Minnesota Wild.
14 Boston Bruins Boston Bruins 29-23-6
▲ 2
Last week’s dismissal of head coach Claude Julien was a shock, but the Bruins have responded by outscoring opponents 14-6 while winning three straight.
15 Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto Maple Leafs 25-18-11
▼ 4
Leafs are a playoff-caliber team, but must take care to focus as they head down the stretch run. If they get caught looking ahead, it could all fall apart.
16 Los Angeles Kings Los Angeles Kings 28-23-4
▼ 2
Goaltender Peter Budaj has filled in admirably, but Jonathan Quick is one of the emotional leaders of this team. Quick’s return to the lineup is imperative if they are to make the playoffs.
17 New York Islanders New York Islanders 25-19-10
▲ 1
Interim head coach Doug Weight is turning things around. Since his tenure began on Jan. 17, the team has earned a record of 8-2-2. Playoffs hopes are beginning to resurface.
18 Philadelphia Flyers Philadelphia Flyers 27-22-7
▲ 4
Brilliant rookie center Travis Konecny is injured and will be on the mend for about four weeks. Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is suffering through a sophomore jinx. These are trying times in Philly.
19 Calgary Flames Calgary Flames 28-26-3
▼ 2
If the Flames miss the playoffs, they can look back at games such as the recent 5-0 home loss to Arizona as the cause of their undoing.
20 New Jersey Devils New Jersey Devils 23-22-10
▲ 1
Forward Michael Cammalleri has not scored a goal in his last 16 games. This does not bode well for the future, although he may get dealt at the trade deadline.
21 Florida Panthers Florida Panthers 24-20-10
▼ 2
The Florida Panthers still appear to be headed nowhere. What began as an indifferent season continues to be an indifferent season. Half of this team should have suitcases packed in anticipation of the trade deadline.
22 Tampa Bay Lightning Tampa Bay Lightning 25-24-7
▲ 4
Just 4-4-2 in the last 10 games, it is really beginning to appear as though the Lightning are not going to turn this season around. Somewhat surprisingly, head coach Jon Cooper has outlasted Jack Capuano, Ken Hitchcock and Claude Julien.
23 Dallas Stars Dallas Stars 22-25-10
It just keeps getting worse; the Stars have lost five of their last six games. By the end of the month, they could be out of the playoff race.
24 Carolina Hurricanes Carolina Hurricanes 24-22-7
▼ 4
Not long ago, a four-game win streak had the Canes on the fringes of the playoff hunt. Since then, they are 3-7 and fading fast.
25 Vancouver Canucks Vancouver Canucks 25-25-6
There is still hope. The Canucks are just four points out of a wild card playoff berth, but the competition is fierce.
26 Buffalo Sabres Buffalo Sabres 23-23-10
▲ 3
Hidden gem - Forward Evander Kane has scored 18 goals in 45 games. By the numbers, Kane has the potential to become a 40-goal scorer. Maybe next season.
27 Winnipeg Jets Winnipeg Jets 25-29-4
▼ 3
Mired in a four-game losing streak, the Jets will be at home to face Dallas before heading on a four-game road trip, which will likely determine their playoff fate.
28 Arizona Coyotes Arizona Coyotes 19-28-7
There is a bright spot here: 21-year-old forward Christian Dvorak has scored five goals in the last five games.
29 Detroit Red Wings Detroit Red Wings 22-24-10
▼ 2
Last week, longtime Wings owner Mike Ilitch passed away. The team is at the bottom of the Eastern Conference - sad times in Hockeytown.
30 Colorado Avalanche Colorado Avalanche 15-36-2
Irony: Few things in nature go downhill faster than an avalanche.
