  1. Hi Eric. I udnsretand what you’re saying. I’m surprised that your P.E. teachers in elementary and middle school didn’t teach the students the basics of different sports. As a recreation coordinator myself we find that teens rarely register for after school classes and programs. They mostly do sports at their schools. So to offer a class for one or two people it doesn’t make sense. I agree that a basics program that covers a different sport each week would be great. Recreation departments would just need to get someone to teach it and to get enough people to sign up for it in order to pay the instructor.Suggestion #1Check out your local YMCA. They have some great programs for all ages.Suggestion #2Go to the library and see if they have DVDs on learning new sports. I know there are instructional videos our there and you can buy them on Amazon, but it would cost you nothing if you were able to get them from your local library.Suggestion #3Get sports games for your game system (Wii, PS3 or XBox). This way you can learn the rules of the game and get a feeling of how it’s played.Suggestion #4After you udnsretand the rules go out on your own and practice. For example, if you want to be able to play basketball, get a ball and go to a park and just shoot around and do some dribbling. For baseball go to the batting cages, for soccer go to the park and kick a soccer ball around. You don’t need to play games with others yet.Suggestion #5Find a group of teens that want a basics class and ask your local recreation department to offer one. If they know there are people waiting to take a class they will put one together. Good luck.
