Halloween Safety Tips

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Halloween is a fun night for kids but one that comes with a lot of responsibility for parents who need to be vigilant while they’re out taking the little ones trick-or-treating especially when crossing the street.

Most kids start hitting the pavement right after dinner and by that time it’s already getting dark out, making it harder for drivers to see children, in particular ones that are wearing dark-colored costumes. Parents may want to consider adding something reflective to the outside of their child’s costume so they are easier for cars to spot.

Another option is to drop a small flashlight in your child’s treat bag or find a way to incorporate glow sticks or glow necklaces into their costumes.

Something else to consider is whether or not your child’s vision is impaired by the costume they are wearing. Is it a hooded costume? Do they have a wig on that might be getting in their eyes? Or are they wearing a mask? If the answer is yes, it might be a good idea for kids to pull their mask up while they are crossing the street or up steps to make sure they can see all of the obstacles ahead of them.

When they get up to the door he or she can pull the mask back down before they say “trick or treat!”
