The 4 | 2015 San Diego Comic-Con Recap

The annual pop culture nerd explosion took place over the weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego. Future film projects, TV shows and all the rabid fans of comics and Sci-Fi franchises descended on the city in hopes of getting an exclusive look at their favorite heroes’ new adventures and create the buzz studios so desire. Hall H is where most of the big stories came out of and with the Disney side of Marvel sitting this year out in favor of reveals at D23. Fox, Warner Bros. and DC Comics stepped things up and showed there are other players, aside from the Mouse, in the superhero game. Here were my four favorite stories to come out of SDCC 2015.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer

Movies like Star Wars don’t really need to show the crowds anything to create positive buzz. Fans are creating so much intrigue trying to unravel the mystery of The Force Awakens, no trailer was needed to create more frenzy. You can’t say the same thing about Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been a two-year production and the film doesn’t even open until late March. There was actually a teaser last year at Comic-Con and fans did get an underwhelming teaser that gave us zero intel on the story. That all changed Saturday in Hall H. We got glimpses of Superman under political fire, Batman and Wonder Woman in action, plus Jessie Eisenberg as Lex Luthor uttering the now famous line “The Red Capes are Coming”. You even heard the Batffleck haters start to change their tune over the actor taking over the cowl. DC’s film division needed to make a splash in Disney’s absence and they succeeded with this trailer and the unreleased Suicide Squad trailer.

Jay Garrick on The Flash Season 2

One thing that made The Flash the best new show on television last season was they always paid off their teases. Fans were treated to broken Gorilla cages and yellow streaks thinking there’s no way the creators will go that route. Turns out they did with the Reverse Flash and even Gorilla Grodd playing major parts of The Flash‘s rookie season. So when that very familiar helmet flew out of the time portal in last year’s season finale, we should have known Jay Garrick the original Golden Age Flash was going to come looking for his lid. Masters of Sex star Teddy Sears will be taking on the iconic role and will team with Barry to take out new villain Zoom who’s faster than both of them. Once again The Flash proves they’re not afraid to take their story anywhere including Earth 2. October 6th can’t get here fast enough.

The New “Green” Arrow Suit

That’s right I said it. This new costume definitely leans heavy on the Green Arrow look from the comics. Stephen Amell wasn’t kidding when he said he had worn the old green suit for the last time. This also confirms that Oliver’s retirement with the lovely Felicity won’t last long for viewers. The new look is more tactical and it will need to be as Oliver will take on the evil Damien Darhk played by former Howling Comando Neal McDonough. Rumors have swirled about the H.I.V.E. making their prescience known this season so Starling City will likely see the Arrow reborn “Green” to save the city on October 7th.

Deadpool

People (including myself) thought there was no way Fox could properly bring the cult comic anti-hero Deadpool to the screen in all of his violent and profane glory. Fans feared a PG-13 watered down version of the Merc with the Mouth with the perfectly cast Ryan Reynolds saddled with a continuation of his character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Boy were we wrong judging by the reaction of the crowd in Hall H. Fans went so bonkers over the hard R rated footage that they played the teaser twice just to appease the masses. It looks like Reynolds got his wish being able to reprise the character and give Deadpool the raunchy and bloody treatment he deserves. I still don’t know if the general movie going public will accept a foul-mouthed, trigger happy Wade Wilson who breaks the 4th wall and talks to the audience, but the fan reaction gives us hope the Fox got things right. Now show us the HD trailer. #NoBootlegs
