10 Summer Living Hacks

Although the calendar would argue that it isn’t quite official yet, I declare that it’s summer here in Florida. The sun is hot, the bugs are out in drones and the sweat is dripping. There’s no denying it – summer is out to get us.

But it doesn’t have to be all perspiration and bug bites. There are so many summer life hacks that can save you from the sun and keep you smiling all season long.

1. SPF Moisturizer | This is not just a life hack, it’s smart. Moisturizing is a key to maintaining healthy skin, and protection is always important. Whether you’re heading to work, the beach or an afternoon brunch, keep your best asset (your face) happy and healthy with a good SPF moisturizer. {purchase here}

2. Vitamin B Complex | This hack has a dual purpose. Vitamin B Complex is full of the vitamins our bodies crave. It’s a great energy source and immune booster. The added bonus: bugs HATE it. Bugs hate the taste Vitamin B Complex leaves behind on your body. Pop a tablet, gummy or pill every morning to stay energized and keep the bugs at bay. {purchase here}

3. Lemon and Cloves | This is another hack that sends bugs running (or flying). Slice a lemon in half and carefully stick cloves (found in the spice section of your grocery store) in the soft part of the lemon. Bugs hate the smell, but most humans don’t. Cloves and citrus smell refreshing and sweet. Sit back and enjoy your fragrant, bug-free zone. {full tutorial here}

4. Cleansing Wipes | Sweat is inevitable here in the great state of Florida. By the end of a hot summer day, the sweat will find you one way or another. Ditch the damp, sweaty feeling with some wipes. Just swipe with a wipe in those (extra) sweaty areas and feel instantly refreshed. {purchase here}

5. Aloe Vera Ice Cubes | Dealing with a sunburn? Try this twist on an old classic. Aloe vera is the sunburn savior, but it can made even better. Buy a bottle of aloe vera at the store or cut an aloe plant into pieces. Squeeze the aloe into an ice-cube tray and freeze it. Apply the cubes to your sunburn to soothe and cure. {full tutorial here}

6. Hair Sunscreen | Just like skin, your hair can easily damage in the sun. Protect your luscious locks with hair sunscreen! Yes, it’s a real thing. Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray, for instance, is a great choice. It’s waterproof, non-greasy and it can be used on both hair AND skin. {purchase here}

7. Dryer Sheet Trick | I’m notorious for walking around with deodorant marks on my clothes – that is, until I learned about this trick. In the summer months, we pack on the deo to save us from the heat, but our clothes pay the price. Erase the marks with a dryer sheet. Rub the sheet on the mark and watch it disappear! {purchase here}

A closed car sitting on a black-top parking lot in the middle of the summer is a heat magnet. But there are ways to keep your car from burning you.

8. Koozie Trick | Koozies are collectibles these days. Every public event, party and wedding seems to have a koozie giveaway. Sure, they keep your beer cool, but what else can they do? Stick a koozie on your gear shift before leaving your car to keep it from burning you upon your return.

9. Steering Wheel Trick | You’ve been burned by your steering wheel one too many times. Save your hands! When parking your car, spin your wheel upside down and then place it in ‘park’. When you return, the top of the wheel (the part that you place your hands on) will be cooler.

10. Seat Belt Trick | The metal of the seat belt can be scorching hot after sitting in the sun. Buckle your belt when leaving the car to keep it away from the sunshine. See, buckling your seat belt is ALWAYS a good idea!
