Four Games Remain But Bulls Staying Focused

It’s been a frustrating season, to say the least, for the USF Bulls football team. Expectations were not sky high but a noticeable improvement over last year’s 2-10 finish was definitely a bar to set for a team with plenty of talent to do just that. Heading into Saturday’s game against AAC opponent Houston (4-3, 2-1 AAC) at Raymond James Stadium, the Bulls hope to rebound once again from a tough conference loss last Friday night at the hands of Cincinnati. With four games remaining USF needs to win three of them to qualify for a bowl game. Senior defensive tackle, Todd Chandler, says it’s hard not to do the math but they have to remain focused on the game in front of them.

“It’s very hard as a senior,” Chandler said Tuesday. “But you have to look at it as one game at a time. As seniors we are forcing that mind set of one game at a time.”

Junior tackle, Brynjar Gudmundsson, also agrees it’s about focusing on what is right in front of them and not looking too far ahead.

“You gotta worry about right now,” Gudmundsson said. “Otherwise you’ll start losing focus on what’s going on at the moment. You can’t look ahead.”

Head coach Willie Taggart takes a bit more harsh approach to that mind set but definitely agrees with his players.

“We’re just not gonna get to a bowl game, it just doesn’t happen like that,” Taggart said. “We gotta take it one game at a time. We can’t look ahead. We aren’t good enough to look ahead.”

Saturday’s game marks the second time the Cougars have come to Raymond James to face the Bulls. The last meeting was back in 2001 where USF handily defeated Houston 45-6.

The Bulls will also sport a new helmet Saturday to pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces. It will be an all white helmet with the American flag colors strewn throughout the logo on both sides. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM.
