Students Create Magnetic Bracelet That Repels Sharks, Stingrays

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – Students at the Grandview Preparatory School have created a magnetic bracelet that repels sharks and stingrays.

“The worry of sharks or a shark attack is kind of in the back of the mind of every surfer,” ninth grader Tasman Rosenfeld told WPTV-TV.

Rosenfeld loves the ocean and started Shark X as a science project.

“I had knowledge about elasmobranchs, cartilaginous fish and their sensitivity to electromagnet fields and pulses,” he told WPTV.

Rosenfeld demonstrated his bracelet on Saturday at the Sandoway House Nature Center to onlookers.

“Well, when he first put it in and the shark moved away and I was like, ‘Wow, this really worked,’ and I was amazed,” Judy Hall told WPTV.

The project got great reviews at a school fair.

“The entrepreneur fair was a way to get the kids to use their own ideas coupled with what they’ve been learning in school and outside of school and come up with something that would be useful to the world,” Jackie Westerfield, Head of School at Grandview Preparatory School, told WPTV.
