FANNING SPRINGS, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — A 6-year-old boy was killed by his family’s two pit bulls while he was outside playing.
The attack occurred at their Fanning Springs home Thursday morning, The Gainesville Sun reports.
The boy went outside with the pit bulls following behind him before the attack.
The Sun reports that the boy’s aunt and grandfather were inside watching TV when she noticed her nephew lying motionless in the driveway.
She called 911 at 8:15 a.m., but when first responders arrived, it was too late.
“It appears right now to be a terrible tragedy,” Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum told The Sun. “The family is incredibly distraught.”
The family told authorities that the boy never had problems with the two pit bulls and that the dogs were “well cared for.”
The two pit bulls, along with four other dogs were seized by the Levy County Animal Control, The Sun reports.
The family’s name is being withheld until the mother is notified. The father, who had custody of the boy, was at work at the time of the attack.
