RIVERVIEW, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A 4-year-old boy was killed by his uncle’s two pit bulls Saturday.
The family told police that they lost track of Logan Shepeard after leaving him the living room eating ice cream at his uncle’s home on Rhodine Drive.
Neighbors heard screams coming from the front yard and found the family’s two dogs lying over the boy.
“It hits you right in the heart because if anything happened to my kids I don’t know what I would do,” Crystal Hunley told WTVT. “I couldn’t even imagine what those parents are feeling right now.”
Two deputies were nearby at the time and ran when they heard the screams, but it was too late for the little boy.
“I feel so sorry for the family I can’t believe that,” Huntley shared with WTVT. “I have two kids of my own. I know I wouldn’t even be able to stand if that was mine.”
Police aren’t sure how the pit bulls got out, but did explain that they have never responded to an animal call at the house.
Hillsborough Animal Services and the police will continue to investigate. The two pit bulls were euthanized Sunday afternoon and no charges have been filed.
