Fisherman Catches Stingray While It Was Giving Birth

PUNTA GORDA ISLES, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A teen from Punta Gorda Isles caught more than he expected when a pregnant sting ray ended up on his fishing line.

Calvin Conger caught a stingray just as it was giving birth while fishing for sharks near Ponce de Leon Park this week.

Even more, Conger captured the birth on camera and shared the video with WINK News.

“We were kind of bummed about it,” Conger said. “We got it on the boat, we put it on the fileting table because we we’re going to use it for bait. We got a closer look at it, and there was another stinger hanging out.”

Thankfully, the teen didn’t use the pregnant stingray as bait, and after noticing the second stinger hanging out, Conger’s father helped push not one, but two baby sting rays out of the mother.

Conger’s girlfriend on the other hand seemed a bit freaked out and can be heard screaming in the video.

“It like flopped right out. It was weird,” Harris said. “It makes me want to go fishing more. You just see the weirdest things, and it was an awesome moment.”

After the two baby stingray were born, all three were released back into the water.
