Police: 12-Year-Old Boy Takes School Bus On Joyride To Wal-Mart

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A 12-year-old boy was arrested after authorities say he took a school bus on a joyride .

Bay County deputies said that Michael Wade Propst was riding his bicycle Tuesday at 4 a.m. when he spotted the unlocked school bus in someone’s driveway, WFTV reported. Since the keys had been left inside, he decided to get in and drove the bus for roughly 15 miles.

Wal-Mart employees called sheriff’s deputies when they noticed the bus being driven erratically through their parking lot. The employees told the Panama City News Herald that Propst appeared to be having difficulty parking the bus.

“It was just odd the way they were driving it,” Roy Hoover, a Wal-Mart employee, told the News Herald. “He was having a hard time parking it, like he’d never drove one before.”

Bay District School Security Chief Mike Jones shared that the camera footage from the bus showed that Propst handled the bus well while driving.

“We watched him on there and he was pretty cool in character. He just cranked it up and drove it like he had done it all his life,” Jones told WFTV.

He has been charged with grand theft and felony criminal mischief. Propst is now in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
