PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A mother is accused of intentionally burning her young children with a hot stick so that she would be able to identify them.
Kayla Oxenham has been charged with child abuse after branding both her five and seven-year-old children. The children told police that the 23-year-old mother told them that she “forgot how much she loved fire,” WBBH reported.
The woman used a lighter to burn a stick and then proceeded to injure the children’s arms by touching the hot stick to them. Oxenham then told the children that she burned them so that the kids could have ice cream and that she could identify them as being her own.
At least one of the children had injuries that indicated they were burned after a medical exam was completed.
WBBH also reported that prior to this incident, the mother was accused of grabbing her 5-year-old by the hair and hitting her head into a wall repeatedly.
She has denied beating her children to the police and would not speak about the alleged burns.
Oxenham is listed as married and as a medical assistant on the Charlotte County Sherrif’s Office website.
