Boy, 9, Dies, Brother Injured While Walking Dog

LAND O’LAKES, Fla. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy is dead and his younger brother is in serious condition after being struck by a van while walking their dog with their mother.

The dog also died in the crash Wednesday morning in Land O’Lakes, which is north of Tampa.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Anita Pallares was walking on the correct side of the road with her sons — 9-year-old Jorge Cruz and 7-year-old David Cruz when the van hit them. Troopers say 21-year-old John Ryals failed to observe the pedestrians and the dog.

Jorge Cruz and his mother were taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. David Cruz was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.

The accident report notes that alcohol was not a factor and that an investigation continues.
