As we all know by now, Michael Sam is the first openly gay athlete drafted in the NFL. Sam’s journey was documented on both ESPN and the NFL Network. Along with those networks, the OWN Network announced that Sam’s journey to the NFL was being documented for a series that was set to be aired later in this year.
When it was announced that this was going on, many felt that any player in the 7th round only had a chance to make the league if they keep their head down and work their tale off. Bringing in outside media isn’t exactly something that NFL locker rooms and front offices are comfortable with (just ask Tim Tebow).
Sam has since announced that the series is being postponed. Was that do to public pressure? Did Sam and his camp decide it wouldn’t be wise to do at this moment? Did the Rams tell Sam that this is not something they want in their locker room? Whatever the reason, Sam is getting his wise when he saod that he wants to be known as Michael Sam the football player, not Michael Sam the gay football player.
