POMPANO BEACH, Flo. (CBS Tampa) – Police arrested a 34-year-old grandmother for leaving her four kids and a grandchild at home alone while she went to gamble at a nearby casino.
The five kids, ages 2 to 12, were walking around asking for food, when a neighbor spotted them and called police, the Sun Sentinel reported.
Crystal Hernandez was arrested at her home Tuesday by police after her home was found in a terrible living condition for children.
According to the Sun Sentinel, Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew McGee “said the smell of urine and feces in the house was overwhelming, and “almost unbearable to stand,” he wrote in his report.”
While in court Wednesday, Judge John Hurley explained to the woman that McGee found “feces on the kitchen counter, along with feces on the floor.”
She shook her head in disagreement with Judge Hurley.
McGee’s report also stated that there was no food in the cupboards, “minimal” food in the refrigerator, and that “dirty clothes were thrown around the residence, along with old food.”
The children were removed from the home by BSO’s Child Protective Investigations Section.
Hernandez has been charged with five counts of felony child neglect without great harm.
