Police: Homeowner Fatally Shoots Robbery Suspect

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) — A robbery suspect is dead after a shooting inside a home in central Florida.

Winter Haven police say they responded to a robbery call early Monday.

Luis A. Pena told police the family heard sounds like someone trying to break in the house. He went to investigate and saw a man rattling the French doors leading from a back porch.

Police say Pena grabbed a firearm and fired a warning shot to scare the intruder off. However, the man continued into the home. The two other residents also grabbed firearms and additional shots were fired, hitting the man. Police say they haven’t determined how many shots were fired.

Authorities are trying to identify the man.

An investigation continues.
