Former Colts GM and ESPN analyst Bill Polian joined Booger and Rich to grade the Bucs free agent moves that included releasing Darrelle Revis, signing Michael Johnson at defensive end and signing and naming Josh McCown the starting QB.
Polian liked many of the offseason moves that the Bucs made including the release of Darrelle Revis. Polian said he’s a great corner but not necessary for the amount of money he was making in Lovie Smith’s system. Polian liked the Bucs replacement for Revis in their signing of Alterraun Verner. Polian told us that if you drew up a perfect cover corner it would look like Verner.
Polian also liked the signing of veteran QB Josh McCown. McCown can make all the throws and is everything you want in a starting QB. Polian also noted that McCown is a great mentor for Mike Glennon who can sit and learn behind an experienced QB.
Many have criticized Lovie’s lack of offensive moves in free agency but Polian said he wouldn’t worry about that. The Seahawks proved that you can win games on defense and running the ball and the Bucs will look win games by doing that and controlling the ball.
As the draft approaches, many speculate whether or not the Bucs will take a WR or QB with their 7th pick. Polian said he picked up both Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne with picks outside of the top 10 showing you don’t need to draft a WR that high.
As far as QB’s go, Polian said Blake Bortles has everything coaches and scouts are looking for in an NFL QB. He likes his arm and just needs to see him develop his footwork. Teddy Bridgewater is the most NFL ready QB right now according to Polian. Polian finally said that Johnny Manziel is a unique QB comparable to Fran Tarkenton. He has a good arm, is competitive, a gym rat and can make plays but an offense has to tailor their playbook to him and Polian worries about small QB’s like Manzeil and Bridgewater getting injured.
