(AUDIO) Jason Licht: I Don’t Want to Say Revis was Cut Because of Money

Jason Licht 3-12-14

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht joined Booger and guest host Marc Ryan to discuss the Bucs free agent signings and the decision to move on from Darrelle Revis.

Licht said that they tried to trade Revis and they also tried to renegotiate his 16 million dollar contract, but they failed to reach a trade agreement and had to make the tough decision to cut him.

Despite the allegations that Revis was cut because Lovie Smith plays a Tampa 2 scheme, Licht told Booger and Marc that Revis could’ve easily been plugged into this scheme. The real answer to why Revis was cut can be seen by the Bucs recent moves in free agency Licht said. Licht didn’t however want to say that Revis was cut because of money.

The Bucs signed Josh McCown to a 2 year deal today and Licht said that the Bucs did sign him with the thought in mind that he could start, but didn’t say he was the starter.

Will the signing of Josh McCown mean the Bucs won’t draft a QB this season? Licht said that’s not the case. He went as far to say that you can never pass on a franchise level QB in the draft, but wouldn’t say who the Bucs might be looking at. He did say however that they got a franchise QB in Tom Brady in the 6th round when he worked in New England and the QB the Bucs are looking at may not be one everyone else is talking about.

Mike Williams has had issues off the field this season and Licht said that as of today he’s still on the roster. He’s excited to see what he can do and he hasn’t done anything wrong recently so that’s a positive move on his part and they hope that remains the case.

One major complaint about Lovie Smith in Chicago was that his defense was strong but his offense couldn’t score points. Licht told us that despite the Bucs signing several defensive stars in free agency, they know that they can’t win games 3-0 in this league.
