Lightning GM Steve Yzerman joined Booger and Rich to discuss the Marty St. Louis trade to the Rangers for Ryan Callahan.

When asked if the trade was a result of St. Louis being left off of Team Canada’s roster Yzerman said that he can’t speak for St. Louis but it likely played a part of it but there’s probably more to it than that.

Yzerman said that he and Marty, along with owner Jeff Vinik and others, had multiple conversations with St. Louis about his future with the team. Initially, Yzerman said he didn’t want to trade St. Louis but in the end he wanted to honor St. Louis’ wishes.

St. Louis and Yzerman did talk before Team Canada’s roster was named but he doesn’t know if that has any relevance to what happened now.

Many have blamed Yzerman for not naming St. Louis to Team Canada’s roster initially and Yzerman told Booger and Rich that he did have final say in the roster and won’t deflect any of the blame. He and other members of Team Canada’s staff decided to go with 14 forwards and St. Louis wasn’t one of them.

Many argue that Yzerman could’ve waited until the Summer to trade St. Louis. Ultimately Yzerman said that he knows he could’ve made the deal in July but he felt that this deal with New York was best for the team and that this was the best time to execute a trade for the Lightning’s captain.

Yzerman admitted that the St. Louis trade rumors had to have some affect on the team, but he can’t question St. Louis’ effort. He also noted that he isn’t prepared to name a new captain yet, but he will discuss it with head coach Jon Cooper.

So are the Lightning a better team because of the move? Yzerman said he doesn’t know. They are a different team Yzerman said but we’ll just have to see if they are better for the trade.
