Man Arrested On Drug Charges Said Cocaine Is Legal In Florida

KEY WEST, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – Pleading ignorance of the law won’t keep you from getting arrested, as a Key West man found out.

46-year-old Guy Lanchester was arrested after a Key West resort security guard reported suspicious activity, reports The Bradenton Herald.

Police officer Darnell Sealy arrived on the scene to question the man. “I asked Lanchester what he had in his hand and Lanchester quickly shoved his hands into the flower pot and yanked them back out,” he said.

Sealy retrieved a bag containing less than a gram of cocaine. While he was slapping the cuffs on Lanchesters, he protested, saying “I don’t understand. I thought cocaine wasn’t illegal in Florida.”

It isn’t, and Lanchester was charged with cocaine possession and tampering with evidence, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
