SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A 101-year-old man has announced his intentions to run for Congress.

Sarasota County resident Joe Newman will be vying for Florida’s 16th Congressional District, WFLA is reporting.

He feels that his age is an advantage to him, and that his years of life experience have given him an education that he is keen to share with others.

“You learn through life you have certain responsibilities,” he told the station. “And if you don’t fulfill them, how can you look in the mirror?”

Newman lived through the Great Depression when he was just 16 years of age – one of many formative experiences in his long life, and one of many dramatic national shifts he witnessed over the years.

Some of his trials and tribulations have inspired his aspirations. If elected, Newman hopes to work toward creating a government that can eradicate poverty and take care of its senior citizens by properly funding Social Security and expanding Medicare.

And for those who might doubt him, he had a few choice words.

“If people are saying, who is this fool at 101 and running? Call me a fool. I’m sorry, but I’ve got to get out and convince John and convince Jim, hey think!” he told WFLA. “What is the best thing our society can do and what is the responsibility of our society?”

He continued, “My hope is that we get a chance to speak out and make people reflect on what you want from your society.”
