Tuesday morning the Minnesota Vikings were still unsure who their next head coach would be. But early Wednesday morning, the Vikings made the decision to hire Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as the team’s next head coach, according to league sources.
During Zimmer’s second interview with the Vikings on Tuesday, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf was the one asking most of the questions and he ultimately made the final decision very early on Wednesday to hire Zimmer, who had spent the previous five seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Bengals.
Ultimately, Wilf was very impressed by Zimmer’s passion for the game of football and his demeanor in general, a source said. After a rough and disappointing season, the Vikings were looking to go in a new direction and they felt Zimmer was the perfect fit for the future.
On Wednesday, ESPN also reported that Zimmer is looking to hire current Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner for the same position on his staff. According to the report, the Vikings received permission to interview Turner.
