Police: Babysitter Left Child, 2, On Back Porch Without Shoes While Drinking

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – Deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrested a babysitter after they say she left a 2-year-old on a porch in 39-degree weather.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, 28-year-old Candace Long was asked to babysit the child by her father earlier this week while he ran errands.

Instead of properly caring for the child, however, Long took him to a friend’s house. It wasn’t until neighbors called the police regarding “[an] unknown adult and young child who were sitting on the resident’s screened-in porch” that father and child were reunited.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, they found Long to be intoxicated and the child to be without shoes, shivering in the cold winter weather while she slept.

“When Long woke up, she was incoherent and muttering that she was drunk because it was her birthday,” sheriff’s office spokesman Brandon Haught told the Sentinel. “She had no idea who the child was.”

She had also sustained an injury just under her right eye, but police were unable to determine the origin of the wound.

Long is now facing child neglect charges, the Sentinel learned.
