Former Police Chief To Run For Orange Co. Mayor

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Former Orlando police chief Val Demings says she wants to be mayor of Orange County.

In announcing her candidacy on Tuesday, Demings says she has filed the paperwork for her candidacy. She plans to officially kicking off her 2014 campaign on Thursday at an event in downtown Orlando.

Mayor Teresa Jacobs is seeking re-election.

The former police chief says she has been approached by people in recent months seeking the position and that she has grown disappointed with “the forgotten promises of the current administration.”

Running as a Democrat, Demings lost a close congressional race to Republican Rep. Dan Webster in 2012.
