Pregnant Woman Killed During Tampa Home Invasion

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A pregnant woman is dead and a suspect is in critical condition following a home invasion in suburban Tampa.

Police say two masked robbers entered the home early Sunday and shot 22-year-old Salatheia “Sunshine” Smith, who was six to eight weeks pregnant. Her boyfriend unleashed his pit bull on the intruders. It attacked one intruder and the other shot the dog in the leg.

As the intruder was struggling with the dog, he dropped a handgun. The boyfriend, Charles Patrick Duefrane Jr., picked up the gun and shot one of the suspects. Both robbers fled the scene. One collapsed on the sidewalk out front and was taken to the hospital.

Duefrane’s mother and 4-year-old sister were visiting. Police say the mother shielded the girl and neither was injured.

An investigation continues.
