TAMPA, Fla. (CBS Tampa) - A gun rights group has decided not to raffle off a bible and a Kel-Tec PF-9 handgun because of controversy, according to Time Magazine.
It’s the same 9mm semi-automatic handgun model that George Zimmerman used to fatally shoot Trayvon Martin in February 2012.
The Gun Rights Preservation Forum had been planning the sell the items at a fundraising event in Viera, Florida on November 4th.
Zimmerman’s defense attorney Mark O’Mara will be the keynote speaker.
Host Bob White tells Florida Today the group was not aware the gun model was the same as in the Trayvon Martin shooting.
He said while they believe Zimmerman had the legal right to self defense under the law, “we do have empathy for the parents of Trayvon Martin. Losing their son was tragic, regardless of the circumstances.”
The event will still go on as scheduled, but the group is postponing the raffle until December.
Members who bought a raffle ticket have been assured their entries are still valid.
