SEMINOLE, Fla. (CBS Tampa) - A pit bull is credited with saving the life of a cat that was being attacked by two coyotes.
Area resident Sherree Lewis, who is watching both the dog and cat for her son while he is away fighting in Afghanistan, recalled the recent attack while speaking with WTVT-TV.
“As I was walking to the door, I could see the coyotes over here,” she said to the station while indicating a nearby part of her neighborhood. Soon after spotting the animals, she said they attacked the cat, named Kitty.
“One had her by the neck and the other had her by the tail,” she said, before adding that the family pit bull, Jack, soon came to Kitty’s rescue. “I didn’t know Jack could run that fast. He was on them so fast.”
Thanks to Jack’s intervention, Kitty is alive, though she did sustain a broken tooth and a head injury. Lewis told WTVT that she is well on the road to recovery.
She added, “Jack is a hero. He saved the kitty’s life and he just shows how good dogs can be. Big dogs can protect you, especially if something like this happens.”
Following the incident, officials with Pinellas County Animal Rescue are warning area residents to keep their pets inside at night to protect them from coyotes.
