CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – Officials with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office are attempting to find a new home for a dog who was abandoned by his owner.

According to a post to the Facebook page of the Sheriff’s Office, the dog was found alone with only a note.

“The note said he could only take 1 dog with him and this one was left behind,” the Facebook post said, adding that, rather than bringing the second animal to a shelter for adoption, he reportedly abandoned him in the former home before leaving town.

Police are now attempting to find the dog, described as a “young adult, brown & white shepherd mix, neutered male,” a forever home.

As of Thursday morning, the photograph had been shared 85 times by other Facebook users. Several people commented on the post as well, expressing ire regarding the poor treatment of the animal and inquiring as to whether or not charges could – or would – be filed against the previous owner.

Police advised interested parties to visit the official website for Citrus County Animal Services, or to call (352) 746-8400 for more information.
