Reporting Justin Pawlowski
As I sat watching another brutally hot practice on Saturday, it hit me. This Buccaneers team is good. I mean really good.
It’s been a long time since fans of the Buccaneers could look to the organization as a proud representation of our community. There has been a lack of star power and far too many players with run-ins with the law. In just a few years, general manager Mark Dominik has done a good job of correcting the mistakes and building the roster.
I’ve had the chance to watch two of the Buccaneers training camp practices, and that was all I needed.
Darrelle Revis matched up with Vincent Jackson.
Donald Penn, Carl Nicks, Jeremy Zuttah, Davin Joseph, and Demar Dotson together again on the offensive line.
Dashon Goldson is roaming the middle of the secondary looking to make big hits, while also making spectacular interceptions.
Doug Martin showing his quickness and power, while Brian Leonard and Peyton Hillis battle off the young backs of Mike James and Michael Smith.
Gerald McCoy is on the verge of NFL stardom.
Lavonte David and Mason Foster are flying all over the field.
Mike Williams is still making plays on the ball in the air.
Adrian Clayborn and DaQuan Bowers with opportunities to be on the field at the same time.
There have been years where expectations were manufactured, but not this year. Expectations should be high with this team.
We all know what this season means for Josh Freeman. I don’t care if it’s Freeman, Mike Glennon, or anyone else, whomever the Bucs quarterback is moving forward will have more weapons than any Bucs quarterback has had in the past 37 years.
I do not have a crystal ball. I do not know what their final record will be. I do know that the NFC is very tough this year, but why can’t the Buccaneers be one of the main reasons it is as tough as it will be?
Health is also a concern among fans. This story is not about the future. This story is about what this team has on its roster right now. Every championship team needs a little luck when it comes to staying healthy. No one wants to get injured. Let’s hope that lady luck is on the Bucs side this year.
We as Bucs fans have seen the organization try to hype up players like Jeff Garcia, Barrett Ruud, Aqib Talib, and others over the past decade. We didn’t buy it. When you look at this roster this year, things are different.
I do not know if this team will win a lot of games. I don’t know how they’ll be as a team. I don’t know if they’ll stay healthy. I don’t know if Josh Freeman will become the quarterback the organization has been waiting for since they selected him four years ago. I do know that this is the most talent the Buccaneers have had entering a season since they won the Super Bowl in 2003.
For that, I’m excited.
