Woman Crushed By Homemade Elevator

WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. (AP) — A Tampa Bay area woman was crushed to death by a friend’s homemade elevator.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office reports that 66-year-old Margaret Elizabeth Harrison went to her friend’s Weeki Wachee home Tuesday morning. The friend, Jean Blair, had sent the outside elevator to the first floor in anticipation of her friend’s arrival. But after Harrison didn’t show up for more than an hour, Blair called Harrison’s boyfriend.

Deputies say the boyfriend came over and found Harrison underneath the lift. Officials pronounced her dead at the scene.

The elevator had reportedly been built by Blair’s husband from a forklift, wood and welded metal. They had never gotten a permit for the device, and building officials have since shut it down.

The death has been ruled an accident.
