Drone Loses Control, Crashes Near Busy Interstate Outside Orlando

Local 6, an Orlando-area news station, has obtained the wreckage of a low-tech, but highly intrusive drone aircraft in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The remote-controled craft lost control near Interstate 4 and crashed in a tree.

Fears over a lack of privacy and public safety have increased the clamor over domestic drone user by the government, but what happens when the drone is built, and employed by a private citizen?

Local 6 was able to locate the individual responsible for the vehicle, a student named Guimy Alexis. “The only thing I want to do is essentially record a flight, put some music on it, and put it on YouTube,” Alexis told WKMG.

After accessing the onboard camera and watching the footage, not only did they find that the drone was out of control while over a major interstate (a violation of state law), Local 6 also discovered that Alexis was focusing on someone in particular before the malfunction occured. Before it lost control, footage found onboard clearly shows the Alexis focused in on a female sunbather as she was seemingly unaware.

[…] A QF-4 drone crashed on takeoff near a highway in Florida. The writer used that crash to bash surveillance drones…a large stretch. Target drones have been used since WW II. The Air Force live-fire target range over the Gulf of Mexico has existed since that time as well. A QF-4 is not a Predator nor a Global Hawk surveillance UAV. Neither is it a small camera-equipped surveillance drone such as the one that crashed near Orlando last month. […]
