TAMPA, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A Florida family is accused of letting a woman rot away in bed for years.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the family of 66-year-old Mary Winston neglected her for three years as she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, causing her to be bed-ridden.
Officers described the conditions the body was found as horrific. Deputies described that one bed sore in her back was so deep you were able to see her rib cage. They also said that maggots were found inside and outside her body.
When the coroner came to claim her body, her back was fused to the bed sheets.
“In addition to that, she was laying in urine and feces, a condition no human being should have to be in,” Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Detective Larry McKinnon told WTSP-TV.
Officers arrested her 67-year-old husband, Osmond Winston, and her two daughters Belinda Winston, 39, and Hyacinth Winston, 43. All were charged with aggravated manslaughter of the elderly disabled and are being held in the Hillsborough County Jail with no bond.
A warrant has also been issued for the victim’s son, Osmond Winston, who deputies say is out of town.
