Police: 87-Year-Old Man Shoots Stepson For ‘Being A Moocher’

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – An 87- year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after deputies say “he shot his stepson for being a ‘moocher.’”

William Calvin Crow is also facing a conspiracy and weapons charge from the shooting incident that happened last week.

According to the police report obtained by the Fort Myers News-Press, Craig Barton, 54, was sitting under the carport when Crow approached him, pulled a .25 caliber gun, and fired several shots at Barton’s face and neck.

Police say Barton tried to grab the gun from Crow after being shot. During the struggle, Barton was able to take the gun away and threw it in the yard.

Both men survived the incident and were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Crow is currently in custody at the Lee County Jail.

Investigators added in the police report that “Crow was tired of Barton being a ‘moocher’ and was upset over his stepson’s heavy drinking.”
