ORLANDO (CBS Tampa) — A female Orlando police officer is claiming she was fired because she was unable to wear her bulletproof vest due to her breast implants.
WFTV reports Master Sgt. Rhonda Huckelbery, a breast cancer survivor, is now suing the Orlando Police Department for gender, age and disability discrimination.
“The city of Orlando will address any such accusations in a court of law, if such a suit is filed, and is permitted to be heard by the courts,” Sgt. Jim Young told the Orlando Sentinel.
The Sentinel reports that Huckelbery was brought back on to work in the department’s Airport Division.
Huckelbery, a 25-year veteran, was involved in a controversial shooting at a Target three years ago while supervising the department’s tactical crime unit, WFTV reports. According to the lawsuit, she was cleared of any wrongdoing, but was given a bad review by a new supervisor a few months later and was eventually kicked out of the unit.
Huckelbery claims in the lawsuit that she was passed over by less experienced male officers and has “fewer opportunities for growth,” according to the Sentinel.
Huckelbery is suing the department for at least $15,000.
