Fleeing Suspect Run Over, Killed By Police Officer

DELAND, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Highway Patrol says a man was run over by a patrol car and killed while fleeing DeLand police during a traffic stop.

The incident began early Wednesday after a Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction. The driver fled and the deputy deactivated his emergency equipment.

Troopers say an alert was put out and two DeLand police officers spotted the car and began following it.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/10pT1mr ) reports the car stopped and the driver got out and ran. That’s when the patrol car ran over him.

FHP says four women inside the car were not injured. The agency will review video from the patrol car’s dashboard camera to figure out what happened.

The incident remains under investigation.
