DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — A pack of pit bulls attacked a 27-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter Sunday night.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Brandy Bookamer protected her daughter from the five dogs, suffering “heavy wounds” in the process.
“She may have been fending off the dogs because of her daughter,” Flagler County Sheriff’s Lt. Bob Weber told the News-Journal. “There were puncture wounds and scratches to her extremities. She was barely moving.”
Officials say Bookamer told her daughter to run home while she was being attacked, according to WKMG-TV.
Bookamer was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center, but despite the severity of the attack she is suffering from non-life threatening injuries.
Bookamer’s daughter has been placed with her grandparents as she recovers in the hospital.
The pit bulls involved in the attack have been seized.
