BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa/AP) — Wildlife officials say a 6-year-old South Florida boy suffered minor injuries after being attacked by an alligator in shallow water.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Joey Welch of Pompano Beach fell Friday afternoon into the water at the edge of a boat ramp in the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
Officials say the boy’s father and other bystanders hit and kicked the alligator until it released the child. He was treated at a hospital for cuts and bruises to his right arm, shoulder and chest. His father had a bruised right hand from punching the alligator.
“I didn’t want to play tug-of-war with the alligator,” Joseph Welch, the boy’s father, told WESH-TV. “I didn’t want to get his arm ripped out.”
The federal agency said Monday that trappers captured and killed the 8-foot-long alligator.
