Police: Teen Won’t Be Charged In Man’s Death With Gardening Shears

LAKE WALES, Fla. (AP) — Police say a teenager will not be charged in the death of a 57-year-old man whose body was found on a central Fla. roadway.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reports 18-year-old Isaiah Tillman fatally shot Joseph M. Coney after the Lake Wales man threatened to kill him.

According to an affidavit, 33-year-old Ben Furman told police Coney threatened him and Tillman with a pair of gardening shears during an argument.

Tillman shot Coney in what police and the state attorney say was an act of self-defense.

Coney’s body was found on a roadway early Saturday. Tillman and Furman were arrested on various charges but not with Coney’s death.

Tillman was charged with tampering with evidence, carrying a concealed firearm and violation of probation. Furman was charged with possession of marijuana.
