ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (CBS Tampa) - A woman was arrested last week after she reportedly brought a young child with her to a drug transaction.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, 51-year-old Rachel Augustine Burton was seen conducting a drug deal at around 5 p.m. last Wednesday by police. An 8-year-old girl was seated in the backseat of the car during the deal.
Local authorities followed Burton to a nearby Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits, then approached her and asked to search for evidence.
During the search, the woman reportedly threw a container under the car, which broke upon impact. The contents were revealed to be packets of cocaine and heroin.
Burton, who the paper learned also goes by the last name of Thomas, was subsequently arrested. She now faces multiple charges for drug possession, obstruction and child abuse. She was allegedly released from prison the next day.
Police records obtained by the Times did not indicate any familial ties between Burton and the child, who was picked up by a relative after Burton was taken into police custody.
