FAU Instructor Placed On Leave After Having Students Step On Paper That Read “Jesus”

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Florida Atlantic University has placed on leave an instructor who had students stomp on pieces of paper with “Jesus” written on them as part of a lesson.

The school said in a statement Friday that Deandre Poole was put on leave for safety reasons and to prevent disruption of the university’s activities. The statement says Poole will not teach classes, keep office hours or be present on campus.

The lesson involved having students write “Jesus” in on the paper and then stomp on it after a period of reflection. They were then told to talk about how that made them feel.

News of the lesson provoked a strong reaction, including a request by Gov. Rick Scott that university officials investigate.

Poole didn’t immediately respond to an email Friday seeking comment.
