Police: Mom Leaves Young Kids In Freezing Car To Get Drunk At Bar

DEBARY, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — A mother is accused of leaving her two young children inside a freezing car so she could get drunk at a bar.

According to a Volusia County Sheriff’s report, 30-year-old Cheryn Scaggs left her 1- and 4-year-old children in her car for two hours in 30-degree temperatures early Monday morning while she was drinking at Shotz Sports Bar & Grill.

Bar patrons realized that her two children were left unattended in the bar’s parking lot when Scaggs asked them if someone could drive her home.

The patrons told authorities that Scaggs walked out of the bar a few times between midnight and 2 a.m., but they did not know she was going to check on her kids. The sheriff’s report states that Scaggs told people she left her children at a neighbor’s house.

Scaggs was arrested on child neglect and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.

Her children have been placed with relatives.
