SPRING HILL, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A woman was arrested after police say a 10-year-old boy she was in care of was found drunk and naked wandering the streets.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has charged 31-year-old Nedra Joann Byrd with child neglect.
Police say they were contacted after a neighbor of Byrd’s found the child wandering in the streets late at night.
According to the arrest report, the neighbor knocked on Byrd’s door after she took the child in and noticed Byrd was sleeping on the couch.
According to the arrest report, police arrived at Byrd’s house and was greeted by a man who said the boy was in his room. After the man noticed the boy was not in his room, he tried to wake Byrd. Police say it took several minutes before she woke up and after waking up, she told police the boy was in his room.
According to police, Byrd admitted to be intoxicated. “Yeah, I’m drunk as hell,” she told police.
WTSP-TV reports when police asked the boy why he was outside, he responded by saying that he heard a noise he thought was a friend but could not remember anything else.
The child was placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. While in custody, they did a blood test on the child and found his blood alcohol level was .108.
Byrd is being held on $5,000 bond.
