Florida Mom Pays $12,000 To Hire Armed Deputy At Daughter’s School

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — A mom wrote a $12,000 check to the Flagler County School District for an armed deputy to provide security at her daughter’s elementary school.

According to WKMG-TV, a deputy will be guarding Old Kings Elementary School for six hours a day, five days a week thanks to the donation by Laura Lauria.

“I think it’s commendable that someone is willing to put up her own money to secure the children at the school, but I think it should be done at every school,” Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre told The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

The move comes in response to last month’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 people dead, including 20 children.

The school district was grateful for Lauria’s donation.

“I don’t know how you say no to such a wonderful gesture,” Superintendent Janet Valentine told the News-Journal. Valentine added that Lauria made a “verbal commitment” to pay for the deputy for the entire year.

Parents were pleased with the move as well.

“I think it’s going to make a lot of parents more comfortable that someone else is able to do that, and it’s helping a lot of people,” Lisa Howell told WKMG-TV.

The station reports that all Flagler County high schools have armed guards, but not all elementary schools.

Lauria is president of Police Services Inc., which specializes in SWAT electronics.
