TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Police say a driver was killed in a crash shortly after trying to run over two people who were walking on a sidewalk in Tampa.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. Friday. Several witnesses and a police officer saw a car accelerate and drive on the sidewalk along Nebraska Avenue where two pedestrians were walking. One person jumped out of the way and the other was knocked to the ground.
Police say the officer followed the vehicle down Nebraska Avenue. Before he could catch up the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
The driver was dead at the scene. Police say a passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
No further details were immediately available.
