TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — Tens of thousands of people will descend on the quiet city of Tarpon Springs to celebrate the Epiphany, which honors the Baptism of Jesus Christ by St. John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
This weekend marks the 107th annual Epiphany celebration for the Greek Orthodox community in Tarpon Springs.
Some 25,000 to 30,000 are expected to gather along Spring Bayou on Sunday for the blessing of the waters, a traditional litany procession and a cross dive.
Any male age 16 to 18 baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church and a current member in good standing in one of the area’s churches can participate in the cross dive. The teen that retrieves the cross is said to be blessed with one year’s good luck.
