DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) - A local man has been arrested after first abandoning his infant child at a liquor store, then returning some time later for the child in an inebriated state.
The man, Kenneth Rowe, is also accused of taking the child into traffic and laying down in the street, further endangering the infant’s welfare.
The trouble began Sunday night when the man took his child into the Shark Lounge and Liquor Store. He allegedly asked the store’s clerk to watch the baby while he went outside to smoke a cigarette – then disappeared, Pix 11 News reports.
Rowe, 26, later returned for the nearly newborn child, then took it into the road, where he laid down. The clerk told the station that he had already notified the police about the situation after Rowe disappeared to get drunk.
Pix 11 News learned that he subsequently tried to hide from responding authorities in a nearby clump of bushes. However, the child’s crying reportedly gave away his location.
Rowe is facing a charge of child neglect, the station found, and the infant has been return to its mother.
